Saturday Night Around the NHL/News and Notes
There were 12 NHL games on a busy Saturday night which included two overtime games and two shootouts.
Bruins 3 Hurricanes 2 OT
Chad Johnson stopped 22 of the 24 shots and David Krejci netted the overtime winner in the Bruins overtime win over the Canes. Zdeno Chara and Reilly Smith also scored for the Bruins.
Cam Ward made 35 stops and Andrej Sekera recorded a power-play goal in Carolina's 3-2 overtime loss against Boston. Patrick Dwyer had the other Canes goal.
Wild 3 Jets 2 S/O
Niklas Backstrom made 37 stops and Zach Parise produced a goal and an assist in Minnesota's 3-2 shootout victory over Winnipeg. Nino Niederreiter scored the other Wild goal.
Ondrej Pavelec blocked 33 of 35 shots and Michael Frolik had a goal and an assist in Winnipeg's 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota. Matt Halischuk also had a goal and a assist also.
Rangers 2 Predators 0
Cam Talbot stopped all 17 shots he faced while Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan scored for the Rangers in a 2-0 win over the Preds. Mats Zuccarello chipped in with two assists.
Marek Mazanec stopped 32 shots and Eric Nystrom returned to the Nashville lineup Saturday night after missing three games with an upper-body injury. Nystrom had two shots on net and two hits in the Preds' 2-0 loss.
Leafs 2 Capitals 1 S/O
James Reimer turned aside 49 shots and David Clarkson scored his second goal of the season to help the Leafs edge the Capitals in a shootout.
Braden Holtby steered aside 27 shots and Alex Ovechkin scored his 20th goal of the year in the Caps shootout loss to the Leafs. Grabovski took an inadvertent skate to the face from David Clarkson as he was falling and the Leafs winger was skating by. The Capitals said Grabovski needed 20 stitches to repair two separate cuts. He returned early in the third period.
Ducks 4 Coyotes 2
Jonas Hiller made 42 saves and Dustin Penner scored two goals as the Anaheim Ducks handed the Phoenix Coyotes their first home loss of the season by a 4-2 score. Corey Perry and Sami Vatanen scored for the Ducks.
Mike Smith gave up four goals on 23 shots and Shane Doan had a goal and a assist in the Coyotes 4-2 loss to the Ducks. Mike Ribeiro also scored for the Coyotes.
Senators 4 Red Wings 2
Robin Lehner made 34 saves and Clarke MacArthur scored two goals as the Senators beat the Red Wings 4-2. Chris Neil and Bobby Ryan also netted goals for the Sens.
Jimmy Howard stopped 25 shots and Pavel Datsyuk notched his 12th goal of the season in the Red Wings 4-2 loss to the Sens. Darren Helm also scored his fourth goal of the season.
Flyers 5 Islanders 2
Steve Mason made 36 saves and Matt Read scored two goals in the Flyers 5-2 win over the Islanders. Wayne Simmonds, Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn also delivered goals for the Flyers. Simmonds and Giroux also had assists for two-point nights.
Kevin Poulin gave up the three goals on 16 shots and John Tavares scored his 10th goal of the season in the Islanders 5-2 loss to the Flyers. Eric Boulton also scored for the Isles.
Canadiens 3 Penguins 2
Carey Price made 29 saves and Max Pacioretty scored two goals in the Canadiens 3-2 victory over the Penguins. Tomas Plekanec also notched his seventh goal of the season for the Habs.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 26 saves and James Neal posted both of the Penguins' goals in their 3-2 loss to the Canadiens. Evgeni Malkin assisted on both goals.
Blues 6 Stars 1
Brian Elliott made 34 saves and T.J. Oshie picked up a goal and an assist in the Blues 6-1 win over the Stars. Vladimir Sobotka, Vladimir Tarasenko, David Backes, Derek Roy and Chris Stewart all scored for the Blues.
Kari Lehtonen allowed 5 goals on 18 shots and Brenden Dillon his fourth goal of the season in the Stars 6-1 loss to the Blues.
Blackhawks 2 Canucks 1
Corey Crawford made 36 saves and Marcus Kruger scored the GWG in the Chicago Blackhawks' 2-1 victory over the Canucks. Andrew Shaw also scored for the Blackhawks.
Roberto Luongo turned aside 27 shots and Ryan Kesler scored in the Canucks 2-1 loss to the Blackhawks.
Sharks 2 Devils 1
Antti Niemi made 18 saves while Scott Hannan and Tyler Kennedy scored in the Sharks 2-1 win over the Devils.
Martin Brodeur stopped 28 shots and Patrik Elias scored the lone goal for the Devils in a 2-1 loss to the Sharks.
Avalanche 1 Kings 0 OT
Semyon Varlamov stopped all 19 shots he faced and Jamie McGinn scored the only goal in the game in overtime, as the Avs beat the Kings 1-0.
Ben Scrivens made 32 saves and Anze Kopitar led the Kings with three shots on goal in the Kings 1-0 overtime loss to the Avs.
NHL News and Notes......Josh Harding suffered what appeared to be a lower-body injury after he stepped on a puck during Saturday afternoon's pregame warmup......Ryane Clowe (concussion) resumed skating this week in New Jersey......Ducks Viktor Fasth is expected to miss three-four weeks with muscle inflammation in his lower body......Kings Trevor Lewis was put on the injured reserve list Saturday with a lower body injury.....Ducks Luca Sbisa will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a torn tendon in his right hand.
