There were two games to start the New Year off in the NHL including a snowy epic Winter Classic that went into a shootout.

 

Leafs 3 Red Wings 2 S/O

Jonathan Bernier made 41 saves and Tyler Bozak scored a goal in regulation abd the game winner in the shootout to help Toronto earn a 3-2 victory over the Red Wings in the Winter Classic. James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Leafs in the win.

Jimmy Howard made 24 saves and Daniel Alfredsson scored a goal in the Red Wings 3-2 shootout loss at Michigan Stadium. Justin Abdelkader scored the other Wings goal late in the third period to tie the game up.

 

Lightning 4 Canucks 2

Ben Bishop made 28 saves and Valtteri Filppula scored a goal and an assist in Tampa Bay's 4-2 win over Vancouver. Alex Killorn scored goal and an assist, while rookie Nikita Kucherov and Tyler Johnson also scored for the Lightning.

Eddie Lack made 29 saves while Brad Richardson and Zac Dalpe scored for the Canucks in their 4-2 loss to the Lightning.
